Data Enterprise Reporter The USA TODAY NETWORK, one of the largest news organizations in the nation, is looking for a talented and detail-oriented data reporter. Our team is passionate about uncovering the truth and providing our audience with information to help them navigate their lives. In this role, you will acquire, analyze and make public government data and information that serves the public interest, focusing on taxes, budgets, expenses and salary and compensation data from municipalities, schools and universities, state agencies, boards, districts and commissions. Working with reporters and editors in local newsrooms, you will be responsible for interpreting complex financial information and publishing databases in formats easily navigated by the public. You will spot local and national trends in the data, point newsrooms to unique stories and support presentation through smart visualizations. Along with data analysis and story development, you will work with product, audience, programming and AI teams to perfect the delivery and utility of government information shared on platform and across shared channels. This role is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska, Hawaii and Wyoming.
Responsibilities:
- Retrieve and analyze large datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights.
- Create visualizations and interactive graphics to accompany databases.
- Verify the accuracy and integrity of data used in reporting.
- Stay up to date with the latest data analysis tools and techniques. Use AI tools and techniques to enhance data analysis and visualization.
- Present data, conclusions, and written stories in a clear and compelling manner.
- Contribute to the community’s greater good through impactful journalism.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master's degree in journalism, data science or statistics or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least three years of newsroom experience.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Excel, SQL, Python or R.
- Expertise with AI tools and proven scrapping experience and results.
- Strong understanding of data visualization techniques.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Strong reporting skills, with the ability to gather information from people and public records.
- Strong writing skills, along with a demonstrated ability to distill complex matters.
- Able to work cooperatively, meet deadlines and shift gears for multiple tasks.
- Energetic, curious, focused, and can spot the stories that matter.
- This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $58,000 and $90,625. Base compensation is reflective of many factors, including, but not limited to, the market in which one lives/works, individual education level, skills, certifications and experience. Note: variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable.
