SUMMARY:
This Senior Business Development Specialist - Commercial Trucking Insurance Underwriter role is responsible for the development and management of independent agency relationships within our commercial trucking line, including the development of new business and retention of existing business in a region or territory. Reviews, analyzes, approves or rejects complex business within letter of authority. Serve as liaison with company personnel regarding company business opportunities and problem resolution. Responsible for assisting in establishing the territory’s or region’s overall agency plan.
RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS:
- Calculate, prepare, and develop premium quotations in accordance with corporate underwriting guidelines and delegated authority.
- Evaluate prospective accounts for insurability, determine underwriting eligibility, establish pricing, and accept or reject new business, renewals, and endorsements within authority limits.
- Develop, manage, and support agency relationships, including addressing agent and policyholder needs, providing guidance, and coordinating responses to inquiries and regulatory matters.
- Drive new business growth, profitability, and retention within an assigned territory or region.
- Analyze territory performance, production, loss trends, exposure data, and competitive market information; develop and implement corrective action plans as needed.
- Develop agency plans in collaboration with internal stakeholders to support territory objectives.
- Work collaboratively with internal departments to resolve issues, maintain effective business relationships, and support organizational goals.
- Prepare and interpret territory and management reports and provide periodic reporting as requested.
- Participate in promotional, marketing, trade association, and industry activities to promote company products and services.
- Manage an assigned territory or region and serve as a technical expert and advisor on regional or territory matters.
- Appoint, train, and support agents, agency personnel, policyholders, and internal team members on company products, processes, and systems.
- Lead training initiatives and mentor team members by providing technical guidance, coaching, and professional development support.
- Conduct annual agency audits and support compliance-related activities.
- Participate in special committees, task forces, and projects as assigned by leadership.
- Other duties may be assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Relevant combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, insurance or related field. MBA or other advanced degree is preferred.
- Certification, or progress toward, highly preferred and encouraged.
- A minimum of seven to ten years’ experience in an insurance organization with demonstrated technical knowledge in one or more of the following areas: underwriting, marketing, loss prevention, auditing or similar knowledge that provide the necessary skills and abilities.
- Continuous learning required, as defined by the Company’s learning philosophy.
- Experience with Trucking Insurance Underwriting experience required.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES (SKA) REQUIRED:
- Demonstrated superior judgment in evaluating risks and determining appropriate pricing for prospective policyholders in accordance with corporate underwriting guidelines.
- Ability to manage agency relationships and make sound underwriting decisions.
- Extensive knowledge of jurisdictional laws, regulatory authorities, industry trends, and their business impact.
- Ability to calculate pricing, dividends, and premium quotations for agents and policyholders.
- Demonstrated analytical ability to assess territories and regions, identify issues, and implement corrective actions.
- Ability to analyze and solve complex business problems, evaluate consequences, and make independent decisions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly and respond appropriately to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to be innovative and creative when addressing unique situations.
- Ability to analyze, interpret, and manage data.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in a virtual office setting (home based) with no unusual hazards. Travel is required with occasional overnight stays.

Pay Range
Actual compensation decision relies on the consideration of internal equity, candidate’s skills and professional experience, geographic location, market and other potential factors. It is not standard practice for an offer to be at or near the top of the range, and therefore a reasonable estimate for this role is between $110,000 and $179,000.
