About the role
We are seeking a Underground Blast Design Engineer (Remote) to support Orica's global underground mining operations through the delivery of high-quality drill and blast engineering services. This role is part of Orica's growing Remote Engineering & Design Services capability and provides a unique opportunity to apply underground mining expertise while working from a central engineering hub in Hyderabad.
You will work closely with underground mining operations, technical services teams, global subject matter experts, and WebGen™ specialists across multiple regions. This is an exciting opportunity for underground mining professionals who want to remain highly technical while gaining exposure to global operations. Instead of being permanently based at a mine site, you will support multiple underground metal mining operations around the world, working alongside industry-leading experts and helping shape the future of remote mining engineering services.
What you will be doing
- Deliver remote underground engineering services including drill and blast design reviews, loading package creation, and design validation for global WebGen™ operations.
- Develop, review, and optimize underground blast designs to ensure safety, quality, and operational effectiveness.
- Act as a technical quality gatekeeper by reviewing blast designs and loading packages against Orica standards and critical control requirements.
- Analyse blast measurements and performance data to identify opportunities for improvement and optimization.
- Evaluate stope performance, dilution, recovery, blast outcomes, and design success factors to support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Prepare technical reports, benchmarking studies, and performance analyses for internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaborate with underground operations, technical services teams, WebGen™ specialists, and engineering experts across multiple global regions.
- Ensure delivery of engineering services within agreed service levels and operational timelines.
- Support mentoring, knowledge sharing, and capability development within the remote engineering team.
- Identify and contribute to automation, workflow improvement, and efficiency initiatives that enhance engineering service delivery.
What you will bring
- Bachelor's Degree in Mining Engineering.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in underground metal mining with strong exposure to underground drill and blast design and mine planning.
- Hands-on experience in stope design and evaluation, including assessment of dilution, recovery, blast performance, and stope stability.
- Strong understanding of underground mining methods such as Longhole Open Stoping, Cut & Fill, and Sublevel Stoping.
- Demonstrated experience reviewing and interpreting blast performance data and post-blast reconciliation outcomes.
- Experience using ShotPlus™ UG or other industry-recognized underground blast design software.
- Strong technical problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound engineering decisions in a dynamic operational environment.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across global teams and cultures.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail, accountability, and commitment to quality and safety.
- Experience with Deswik, underground mine planning software, WebGen™, or electronic blasting technologies will be highly regarded.
