Background
CLEAR Global is a nonprofit organization helping people get vital information and be heard, whatever language they speak. As part of this mission, CLEAR Global maintains the Language Use Data Platform (LUDP), a data platform that aggregates and standardizes language and geographic data to support humanitarian and language-access initiatives globally.
As LUDP expands into additional countries and languages, CLEAR Global is piloting and refining workflows for identifying, processing, validating, and publishing multilingual datasets. This internship will support the testing and documentation of these operational processes to help ensure they are scalable, accurate, and sustainable.
Objectives
The objective of this internship is to support a pilot implementation of the “Adding a Country” workflow for LUDP. The intern will help test and document the feasibility, clarity, and timing of the process by working through real country-level language datasets and supporting data preparation, validation, and reporting activities.
The role
The MIIS Intern will support the LUDP Team in piloting workflows related to language dataset acquisition, processing, quality assurance, and publication. Working closely with CLEAR Global staff, the intern will contribute to testing operational procedures, documenting findings, identifying gaps or inefficiencies, and helping improve internal guidance and processes for future country expansion efforts.
Responsibilities

  • Support the identification and acquisition of country-level language datasets from public and institutional sources.
  • Prepare and standardize datasets for integration into the LUDP environment.
  • Assist with data cleaning, formatting, and metadata verification.
  • Run and document data processing workflows using existing tools and templates.
  • Support quality assurance and validation activities, including cross-referencing linguistic and geographic information.
  • Document workflow challenges, ambiguities, timing estimates, and process improvement recommendations.
  • Assist in drafting update reports and maintaining process documentation.
  • Collaborate with CLEAR Global staff to refine operational guidance and workflow materials.
  • Undertake other quality operations tasks as assigned.
  • Act in the best interest of the organization during the project period.

These roles and responsibilities are approximate and may change over time.
Qualifications

  • Current graduate student at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS), preferably in Translation & Localization Management, Localization Project Management, TESOL, Language Technology, Data Analytics, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow structured processes.
  • Comfort working with spreadsheets and structured datasets.
  • Interest in language data, multilingual technology, humanitarian technology, or localization workflows.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Strong written and spoken English.

Requirements
This position is very dynamic. The right person is an energetic team player who agrees with CLEAR Global’s basic beliefs and values and can work remotely while interacting regularly with the international team.

  • Self-starter;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Analytical thinker able to transform ideas into tangible actions;
  • Understands that communication in the right language is key to improved humanitarian response;
  • Team player, collaborative, adaptable and self-motivated;
