At Tri-Merit, we are dedicated to empowering businesses by unlocking and maximizing their R&D tax credits. Our multi-disciplinary team consists of attorneys, engineers, and CPAs who work collaboratively to provide comprehensive, innovative, and effective services to our clients. We are looking for a passionate and detail-oriented R&D Tax Credit Project Manager to join our team and lead our efforts in providing insights and solutions that drive financial benefits for our clientele.

About the role

We are seeking an experienced R&D Tax Credit Project Manager to own the execution and delivery of R&D tax credit engagements. This role is responsible for managing projects end-to-end, serving as the primary client contact, and ensuring accurate, compliant, and well-documented R&D credit studies.

This position is best suited for someone with hands-on R&D tax credit experience who understands both the technical and financial components of the credit and can confidently guide clients through the process.

What you'll do

  • Manage R&D tax credit engagements from kickoff through final deliverables
  • Evaluate client operations to identify qualifying R&D activities and eligible expenditures
  • Apply and explain IRC Sections 41 and 174 in a clear, practical manner
  • Partner with engineers, attorneys, and CPAs to analyze technical and financial data
  • Develop and manage project scopes, timelines, and deliverables
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients throughout the engagement lifecycle
  • Prepare comprehensive R&D study reports and supporting documentation
  • Ensure compliance with current tax laws, guidance, and industry best practices
  • Participate in client meetings, presentations, and internal reviews
  • Maintain a client-focused, non-disruptive approach while maximizing credit opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, engineering, economics, or a related field
  • Minimum 2 years of direct R&D tax credit experience (required)
  • 2–4 years of experience in tax, consulting, or project management
  • Strong working knowledge of IRC Section 41; familiarity with Section 174 preferred
  • Experience identifying qualified research activities and expenses (wages, supplies, contract research)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project management tools

What We Offer

  • Fully remote work environment
  • Meaningful ownership of client engagements
  • Collaborative team of R&D tax specialists, engineers, and attorneys
  • Exposure to complex and high-impact specialty tax projects
  • Supportive culture focused on quality, accountability, and professional growth

Important Note

This role requires hands-on R&D tax credit experience. Candidates without direct R&D specialty tax experience may not be considered
