1.Introduction
Ubongo is Africa’s leading edutainment organization dedicated to creating inclusive, high-quality educational content that supports children’s learning, confidence, curiosity, and problem-solving skills. Through localized multimedia content distributed via television, radio, digital platforms, and offline channels, Ubongo reaches millions of children and families across Africa.
As part of its commitment to generating evidence on the effectiveness and implementation of its educational approaches, Ubongo is conducting a Teacher Follow-Up Study on the Integration of Learning Through Play (LtP) and Edutainment Approaches in Classroom Practice.
In 2025, Ubongo conducted teacher engagement and capacity-building sessions aimed at strengthening teachers’ ability to integrate Learning Through Play approaches, storytelling techniques, learner-centered facilitation strategies, and Ubongo educational content into classroom teaching. While teacher feedback indicated increased awareness, confidence, and perceived usefulness of these approaches, there is a need to understand whether these approaches are being translated into observable classroom practices.
This study will assess how Learning Through Play approaches are implemented in real classroom settings, including classroom interactions, learner participation, engagement, confidence, curiosity, and the use of learner-centered teaching strategies.
Ubongo is therefore seeking experienced classroom observation enumerators to support data collection in participating schools in Nigeria and Kenya.
2.Purpose of the Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to support high-quality classroom observations that assess the extent to which teachers integrate Learning Through Play approaches into their classroom practice. Enumerators will collect reliable and objective classroom-level data using a structured observation tool adapted from the PLAY Classroom Observation Tool and contextualized to Ubongo’s Learning Through Play framework.
3.Objectives of the Assignment
The classroom observation enumerators will support Ubongo to:

  • Assess the extent to which teachers apply learner-centered, participatory, and Learning Through Play approaches during lessons.
  • Observe classroom interactions between teachers and learners.
  • Assess learner engagement, participation, collaboration, curiosity, and confidence during learning activities.
  • Document the use of storytelling, interactive facilitation methods, experimentation, and other play-based learning strategies.
  • Identify contextual factors that support or limit the implementation of Learning Through Play approaches.

4.Scope of Work and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Ubongo MEL team and field coordinator, classroom observation enumerators will be responsible for the following before data collection:

  • Attend and successfully complete enumerator training on study objectives and methodology

  • Integration of Ubongo-inspired teaching approaches.
  • Conduct three classroom observations with the selected teachers
  • Record field notes highlighting important classroom practices, learner behaviors, and contextual observations.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure ethical conduct throughout data collection.
  • Avoid influencing teacher or learner behavior during observations.

After Data Collection
Enumerators will:

  • Participate in daily debrief meetings with supervisors.
  • Report challenges, technical issues, or deviations from protocols.
  • Support data cleaning by responding to clarification requests from the MEL team.

5.Expected Deliverables
Enumerators are expected to provide:

  • Completed classroom observation forms for all assigned lessons.
  • Accurate classroom observation scores based on the observation framework.
  • Detailed field notes documenting classroom practices and learner engagement.
  • Daily field updates and feedback.
  • Timely submission of all assigned data collection outputs.

6. Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong understanding of primary education environments and classroom practices.
  • Previous experience conducting classroom observations, education research, or school-based assessments.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to collect objective observational data.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work professionally within school environments.

7. Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Background in teaching, teacher training, education research, or classroom assessment.
  • Experience conducting qualitative or mixed-method education research.
  • Familiarity with learner-centered pedagogy, Learning Through Play, or child-centered approaches.

  • Fluency in English and relevant local languages.

9. Reporting and Supervision

The supervisor will provide:

  • Daily field guidance.
  • Quality assurance checks.

  • Review of submitted observation data.

10. Duration and Location

  • The assignment will take place during the Teacher Follow-Up Study field data collection period in selected schools across Nigeria and Kenya.
